My TimeMachine couldn't complete the...

... backup because of an error that occured while creating a backup folder.

It's been 117 days since my last backup, so I think it is about time I tackle this "bump in the road", and not push me luck any further. I did not see a similar question in the community, so I ask if anyone has had this problem and knows where I might look to get information on fixing the problem.

It is occurring on my MBP 15 with 10.11.6. The TimeMachine drive hangs off of my AirportExtreme which is actually in bridge mode. It had worked fine, since Nov '16, until April, when I started getting the message. It is taking up 280GB of a 2TB drive, and that 280GB is about 1/6th of the space allotted for TimeMachine...so there is plenty of room on the drive.

Would appreciate any pointers one may have which would assist me in getting backing up again.

Let's start with your AirPort Extreme base station. Which exact model is it? The reason I'm asking is Apple does not support Time Machine backups to an AirPort Disk (an external drive attached to the base station's USB port) EXCEPT for the latest 802.11ac version of the Extreme. Just want to rule this out as a reason for the issue you are experiencing.

Time Machine creates a virtual disk on the network volume. Does this external drive have more than one partition? Does the drive connect directly to the Extreme's USB port OR first to a USB hub, then the port? If the latter, is the hub powered?

The Airport Extreme is actually in bridge mode and is basically a hub. The drive is a WD MBL and it has a MAC partition (700+GB) and a PC partition (remainder of 1 TB). I have been using it for three or four years. There is about 250GB of TimeMachine files. It is connected to an Ethernet port of the Extreme. The drive is used solely for backing up and minor storage of files that need to be available for me to be able to access from various computers. I can see the drive, access the drive and if I had to restore a file I wouldn't be surprised if it worked. It just can not make a folder according to the error message I get.
