Mac Mini late 2012 + Dell UP2516D

I have a mac mini late 2012 model and just got a Dell UP2516D monitor specifically so I could take advantage of the 2560 x 1440 resolution via the display port on the mac. However, when I start up the mac, the monitor displays a message "no DP signal from your device". If I spend long enough messing around, switching input sources on the monitor, restarting the mac, connecting via HDMI and switching sources again, I might eventually get the monitor to display a picture, but there is no consistency and I am no wiser as to what I have done to get it working. If i do get it working, i need to leave the mac on all the time. If I turn it off, I am back to square one. I have the mac set to never go to sleep. I have disabled DP1.2 on the monitor as I believe the mac only supports DP 1.1a. Can anyone provide a solid fix for me? Thanks.
