Greyed

First off, I'd like to start by saying that I'm sorry if I there are other threads that already talked about this. I tried googling for solutions, but I could not find any one article that could help my current problem.

After downloading my songs onto my iTunes, I tried to sync the songs to my iPhone. That's when the "Greyed-out" songs started showing up. In the Library itself, the songs are normal, playable. But under "Devices" -> Music, the songs appear "greyed-out" with a circle being created with two arrows that do not move. Furtherrmore, the "grey-out" song(s) does not sync to my iPhone. Below is a picture of the problem.

Again, the song is plays perfectly fine in the Library. However, it will not play under the Devices -> Music category nor will it appear on my iPhone. Please help me. I am tired of this problem and would like a quick solution. If there was a thread with the exact same problem, please post the link to said thread IF there is a solution. It is much appreciated.

I already tried one of the solutions that worked one time but doesn't seem to work now. The solution involved logging out of one's Apple account then logging back in. As I said, this one doesn't seem to work for me anymore. Any help and input is appreciated. Thanks.

I beleive that symbol means that the song has not yet been transferred to the iPod. If the symbol is not rotating, that simply means that iTunes has "paused for a think". (That's probably the easiest way to explain what it's doing).

I don't understand why you would want to play a song "on your device" while it's plugged into iTunes (why not play it in iTunes?), or at least wait for the Sync to finish. The fact that it's not on your iPhone begs the question "did you wait for the Sync to finish before disconnecting the phone?"

If not, then the solution to your porblem appears to be to wait for iTunes to finish Syncing before doing anything else.

Thanks for replying!

But you misunderstand when I say "I can't play it 'on my device'". Let me clear that up; sorry about that. What I meant was that the song will not transfer to my device no matter how long I wait. It's as if it's on pause like you said. Is there a way to begin the sync again?

Yes I did wait for the sync to finish before disconnecting my phone.

When I came across this problem, there was no Syncing process happening. I dragged the songs from the Library to my Device and boom, those grey songs appeared. I didn't disconnect anything or do anything else but click and drag the songs into my device like I normally do.

This is one of the best write up i have seen on the infamous "GREYED OUT PLAYLIST". I have struggled with this ever since my wife and i purchased out iPhone 4s last october. No matter who i talk to from apple, wheter it be apple care, itunes store or the actual apple store, they dont have a solution for my problem.

One of the techs from the store mocked my wife and said anyone with a computer degree should be able to figure this out in 10 mins(wife mentioned that i have a BS in Computer Information Systems). He joked and said he was only a sophmore in college and said he could do it no problem, but couldnt find a solution for why this is happening to us.

Anyhow, i have deleted everything from my computer that was associated with iTunes, including my registry and reset my phone to factory settings and once i upload my music i still get the "GREYED OUT PLAYLIST". I am going to continue to watch this thread in hopes someone is able to answer this frustrating question. Because right now my 32g iphone 4s is a big waste of money.

Cheers

Thanks for your input.

I would this problem to be solved. I'm starting to think my iPhone 4S was a waste of money too. I can't add any more songs at the moment. It's starting to irritate me. If more people are experiencing this problem, why haven't they done anything yet?

Also, you mentioned that one of the Techs working for Apple tried to help you with the problem, but couldn't? I am wondering why they haven't taken note of the problem? "a work in progress" if you will? Shouldn't they have taken down your contact information and contact you when they figure out the solution to this problem? I'm assuming that they just gave you and your wife an "Oh well, I can't fix it, sorry" response and didn't even attempt to further investigate the problem. If that is the case, then I don't know what is wrong with Apple employees.

I would like this problem to be fixed. I want music on my iPhone.

All right I have figured out "my problem" with the Greyed-out playlist

1. I backed up my music files to an external hard drive and an old iPod that I had. I did not remove anything from my iPhone 4s or update it, I left it alone.

2. Completely removed iTunes from my computer ( this will work for a PC only,I don't own a mac)

  •      control panel, remove iTunes
  •      Start menu>Search bar> "regedt32"   (this opens your registry, you may be prompted "Windows need your permissions to continue" just click continue)
  •      Once your registry is opened
    • make sure "computer" is selected
    • press "CTRL + F"
    • search iTunes
    • delete all associated files, extensions etc with "iTunes"
    • after all that is completed restart, its Microsoft

3. Open up your Internet browser and download the latest and greatest iTunes and install it on your computer

4. After you install the program DO NOT CONNECT YOUR iPod or iPhone

5. Open iTunes> Store> Authorize this computer

  • If you get the "iTunes hangs on access iTunes store" follow these steps, my iTunes did this
  • Close your iTunes,
  • Go to command Prompt
  • (Win 7/Vista) - START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
  • (Win XP SP2 an above) - START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>Command Prompt
  • In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in netsh winsock reset
    • Hit "ENTER" key
  • Restart your computer.
  • If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.

  • Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now. My iTunes started working

6. I connected my old iPod, it populated my playslist/songs/movies I was using before

  • After this loaded I connected my iPhone and to my surprise my phone started automatically syncing
  • All 3000 songs are now able to be played on my phone, now all I have to do is update the Mrs. phone tonight

I hope this helps you and your problems with the infamous "greyed-out playlist"

Cheers,

(READ BOLD AND ITALIC PART FOR SOLUTION) Well,  i think i solved it (and solved, not deleted itunes or any ipod songs) i have an ipod touch 4g and the exact same thing happened to me in itunes when i tried to add a new song, it greyed and wouldn't let me sync it, it didn't apear on my ipod at all, only itunes, i even played it in itunes to check if the file was corrupted, it was fine. so heres what i did, (seeing that i couldn't find a solution ANYWHERE)

I went to itunes, went to the grey song under my ipod section, music, then i went to the greyed out song, pressed delete. so now it wasn't in my ipod, but it WAS in my itunes library. So then i unplugged my iPod, resprung it, plugged it back in, and then dragged the song to my ipod music section. POOF it worked, the song was now on my iPod and playing.

Hey, I had this same problem and I think I found the solution. If you're using a mac, go to Preferences on your Itunes, choose devices and check where it says "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically." For some reason, I think that having it automatically sync messes around with adding your music. Hopefully this helps you!

Hey bruddah Jacob-

I had the same problem with getting missing songs to my ipod touch 4s, and then they were greyed out.  With all due respect to the other guys here who sent out fixes, your reply gave the clearest answer.  I had about 30 songs greyed out, and luckily I only had to do the fix to one song.  The rest came alive by themselves!  Thanks so much.

Does anyone else get the idea that iTunes is like a boat?  There's ALWAYS something going wrong.......

Hey,

If you are using Windows try copying your files directly from Windows Explorer to your device in iTunes. Worked for me!

Good luck!

DYSCO, your tip worked for me

Open iTunes on your phone and click on purchases, find the songs you want and download them.

@DySco's comment was accurate in my case - I've bought a 3Gs as a backup phone, and was having this infernal Greyed-Out issue while trying to manually put songs onto it

I hadn't linked the issue to the annoying auto-sync the phone was attempting every time I plugged it in - a process I always stopped before it was finished.

By forcing iTunes to not sync automatically I was immediately able to transfer the music I wanted to. I assume this will be the case for @ImFrmHawaii as well?

Thanks DySco - it was driving me nuts!

APPLE - listen up to this issue please!

Hey everyone...I had the same problem and just fixed it now.  I have an iphone 4.  Here's what I did:

1. Plug device into itunes.

2. When itunes comes up, go to your music library (bc thats where the grey out songs will play).  Find whichever songs are greyed out.

3. Right click on a song and then click on "Create AAC version". This makes a modified version of the song.

4. When the duplicate AAC is made, delete the original song (the one that wont play on your device).

5. Repeat with all your greyed out songs, but make sure you are doing this in your music library.  You will notice your duplicates added to your "recently added" playlist also.

6. When you are done duplicating the songs, go to your device via itunes and sync your music with your itunes library music.

7. Once sync is done, your greyed out songs should be no more and play on your device.

This worked for me!!! Good luck guys!

I started having this problem 3 months after I received an Ipod Touch 64 for Christmas 2011, and found with the newer Itunes releases it's become more of a problem.

I would manually drag and drop my tracks from the "Music" tab to the Ipod "Music"section (I don't like to sync as I don't have space to keep all my audiobooks on my laptop), and some of the tracks would be greyed out with the circle symbol next to it. I'd wait for it to complete, nothing happened. I'd go to the "devices" section on left and hit the "Sync" button hoping to force it to do something, but nothing would happen. I would then hit "Cancel Sync" and keep trying.

They only solutions I have come up with, and it's hit and miss as to which will work when, is to either eject the Ipod Touch and reconnect, or rerip the track and try again.

I've also noticed, and this may be part of the problem, that often when I connect the Ipod to Itunes it shows me a older usage summary - it says I have 47G in music but really I only have 45G used as I deleted 2G a little while back. I have to eject and reattach the Ipod Touch to get the current reading.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on a Dell laptop, I don't know if that has any effect. But honestly, in an odd way it's nice to know it's happening to other people. I hate reading "I have never seen that before, no one I know has that problem, it's just *you*."
