Can’t Log Into Old Game Centre Account

I got a new iPad Pro and I am having trouble logging into game centre. My Game Centre isn’t really an Apple ID, it’s just a username, not an email. It was created on my old iPad on iOS 5 which was a couple of years before you needed an Apple ID as your account username. Is there a way to log into my Apple ID As every time I try it says that I can’t because it is not a proper Apple ID.
