2017 iMac Headphone Jack

Hi iMac Gurus,

I've been on the phone with Apple Support and can't seem to get a straight answer out of them - just bought a 2017 iMac 27' and thought that the headphone jack in the back was a mini sprig/toslink?  In the specs it says it supports a digital stream so that means it's a mini Toslink right?

So I bought a mini Toslink to regular optical digital cable to connect to my Stereo amplifier, just like I used to do with my old Mac Pro Tower (if you remember that mac had a regular optical digital out) BUT I'm not getting any sound - in system prefs Ive selected headphone port, but on my stereo amp it says the signal is analog!

Any insights?  I guess I could always fall back to the analog 1/8 mini plug to RCA but that would be a shame!!!!
