I have an old mac air 4GB (around 8 years old)....

I have an old mac air 4GB (around 8 years old). I regularly software update. I havent updated operating system for ages. Running on Mac OS X 10.7.5. Safari now longer working on many websites and system is slow. The memory is almost full (1.09GB free) but most files I need. Can I update operating system, as says not enough space for sierra? Are there 'hidden' files that I can delete as most of my power points etc I need on a regular basis
