Deleting files from iMac after upload to iCloud

I uploaded a large video file from my iMac to iCloud and checked to be sure upload was successful. I then deleted the file from iMac and it vanished from iCloud (when I checked the next day). What did I do wrong?

Just to clarify. The only way to get things to iCloud is by using an iCloud service to get them there. You can use iCloud Drive, or iCloud Photo Library. And if you use iCloud Drive or iCloud Photo Library, whatever you are putting into those "places" on your Mac, are mirrored in iCloud. And anything that you do with those files on your Mac  will also be mirrored in iCloud. If you delete them, then they will be gone on the Mac and in iCloud, unless you manually moved the folder or document in question to a separate folder outside of iCloud Drive.

Cheers,

Thanks for the response! Yes, indeed it was fully uploaded, but I didn't think of checking iCloud on a browser. What might have happened? A file uploaded to iCloud (and not "saved" from the application) has no relationship to the original file resting on the hard drive of my Mac, correct?

You said "it was fully uploaded", so does that mean it's there on iCloud?

Using Finder on my Mac, the file appeared fully uploaded: correct memory size was listed, there was no upload progress bar, and I was able to play the video from iCloud.

Did you upload the video to iCloud or did you put it in a folder that is synced with iCloud?

So then it hasn't disappeared, from iCloud, as you originally thought?

This morning it vanished. Before deleting file from my Mac, I played it from iCloud to be sure file uploaded successfully and wasn't corrupted.

Did you check the Desktop & Documents folder on your Mac?

If you upload it on iCloud.com, you can delete the video from your Mac. But if you put it in a folder that syncs to iCloud and delete it afterwards, it is also deleted from iCloud.

I uploaded it, not as a synced file.

Interesting you say iCloud.com because I used iCloud on my Finder (on Mac) and the file was not "saved to" iCloud frm the app, just uploaded. The Folders on my iCloud drive have no synced/corresponding Folders on my Mac.

The file is no longer on my local drive. I did a search for all QT/.mov files and this one is missing.

Did you check for the availability of the file if/when going to icloud.com via your browser?

iCloud is a syncing system, not an external storage system. If you delete them from the device/computer  they will be deleted from iCloud.
