Fake Flash Updates
I continue to receive popup notifications to update Flash. These are clearly not from Adobe. I've run malwarebytes which found a couple of things which were removed but I have a new one (same day).
the url is "mambosolid/lp/?btp_h=865ed56c28c91f3c89d57e9c6bae3f60&appid=4887&clickid=17480 419516185208&dladv=mm-mac-installer&lpc=ec6cl3an&lang=auto"
I've search for any info on this and come up blank.
Any ideas would be helpful. I don't have any Chrome extensions aside from adblock plus and Chrome remote desktop.
Thanks
Pay attention to what web-sites you have open when you get them. Avoid those sites.
You're better off not using Flash at all. Adobe has finally announced its well-deserved demise.
Beware bogus Adobe Flash "installers"
Not sure how that is helpful.. The virus is on my Mac so it just pop-ups whenever the browser is open. This isn't something due to revisiting a bad website. I need to figure out how to find it and remove it. Malwarebytes didn't get the job done.
This seems to be a fairly common issue so I'm surprised Apple hasn't addressed this.
Of course! I have it disabled and removed. This pop-up isn't really attempting to update flash, it's FAKE! Hence why I'm looking for help to identify where it is installed so I can remove it. Malwarebytes failed to identify it.
this seems to be a rather common issue so someone must have solved it by now.
Thanks
Please use the following procedure to determine if the problem is isolated to your Mac, or lies elsewhere.
- Shut down your Mac.
- Load macOS Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac with a third finger.
- At the macOS Utilities screen, release those two fingers.
- Choose Get Help Online.
- Safari will launch, but it will lack your bookmarks, favorites, history and other preferences.
If the problem does not occur in Recovery mode, but returns after restarting your Mac normally, please read If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support. The applicable section is "Remove Internet plug-ins and other add-ons" and the Support documents that follow "Learn more".
Reply with your results. There will be additional suggestions to follow.
I probably wasnt clear in my original post but the browser where I'm having the problem is Chrome.
I have no extensions for Chrome. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it with a clean download. I've scanned the computer with Malwarebytes & Avast.
This is very frustrating... Come on Apple!!!
I would uninstall Avast. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit unless you work with Windows files.

My answer remains the same. If you want to pursue an alternate troubleshooting method you're on your own.

"Avast", "Chrome" and "Malwarebytes" are not Apple products and Apple cannot help with them. You chose to install them, and you bear the consequences for having done so. Contact their respective developers for support with those products.
I have turned to Avast and Malwarebytes in an attempt to rid these adware issues from my system. They may have little benefit and I'll likely remove them. Regardless, they are not the source of the issue.
While I appreciate your earlier recommendation, it centered on Safari and the issue I have is using Chrome. Agreed that isn't an apple product, it is being used by a large segment of Mac OS users and the ability for software to be installed is a security issue that Apple can't ignore in the same way Microsoft can't ignore the virus issues on their platform.
Somehow this virus/adware got installed. it is hiding somewhere and persists even after removing and reinstalling Chrome. So this issue is deeper than just a Chrome issue. There is a security exposure within the OS which is enabling the virus to remain installed.
None of that is relevant, there are no macOS viruses, and you elected to alter your system by installing junk.
If you are unable or unwilling to follow the instructions I posted, I'm afraid I can't help you.
The newest version of MWB for Mac is not a stay resident application and you are already running an Anti-Virus which already almost off us here universally advise against you may be effectively running two anti-virus solutions, this can disable any ability of the multiple instances to detect anything potentially damaging, or cause to identify a normal process as a threat and incorrectly treat it a such. Not only do no Anti-Virus solutions for Windows advise agains this; Microsoft has made it abundantly clear that this is a terrible idea that can destabilize Windows.
https://blogs.microsoft.com/microsoftsecure/2014/08/05/can-i-run-more-than-one-a ntivirus-program/
Microsoft makes no provisions to protect you against this, to say Apple needs to commit to something even Windows wont do on a platform where a litany of virus do exist in the wild and malware and adware are prevalent in a magnitude that OS X could hardly begin to come close to is asking for someone to hold your hand instead of learning to use judgment to make this call. The overwhelming majority of phony 'flash' installs are hosted by sites that are unscrupulous in nature to begin with.
If you go to a dark alley to buy a organs for transplants and you get ripped off do you blame the doctor who told you that you needed a new liver? That's tantamount to the argument you are trying to make.
Folks - I've tried to make the problem clear. The various attempts to clean my system were for more context and should not be the folks of this discussion. Both have been removed. Yes, I understand they should not both be running at the same time etc. etc..
There is no dark alley that I'm exploring to get this problem to appear. I can restart my mac, I can launch Chrome and without visiting a single site (other than my home page - "google.com") a new tab will open pointing to the fake Flash update. This seems to be clear that something on my mac is doing this and NOT due to a website I'm visiting.
Where are the startup apps for Chrome loaded? is there something that happens on a system restart that could be re-enabling a virus?
Please, let's move beyond my desperate attempts to solve this using various virus programs. They were not the source nor the remedy and are no long on my system.
Thanks
