Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

 

Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.

 

If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

I'm having this same problem with my iPad mini.  It was fine last night, and out of the blue today it thinks I have headphones connected.  I don't have a microscopic brush to clean the tiny hole for the headset.  I've done a hard reset and that didn't work. Any other suggestions? Really sorry I didn't go with the Surface...

Our ipad played alert noises, ringtones etc although it was not a 3g pad - wireless only. No music or sound from video or webpages could be heard through the speaker. only headphones. Tried reset etc. to no avail.

 

What worked for us was - to use the correct charging lead that came with the ipad and not another generic lead or lead that came with another product such as an iphone. When we isolated which lead it was, it was used to recharge the ipad overnight. At first sound returned to some apps but not music and the next day all functionality seemed to be restored.

I tried restart it didn't work. What worked for me straight away was to  switch on my Bluetooth and send the sound to a active Bluetooth device. I my case it was a (7 Day Shop Audio Bluetooth Plug). This meant iPad sound was now playing via bluetooth. I then turned off the Bluetooth and my audio was now back to normal.

I Have an ipad air and it also thinks I have headphones plugged in I tried everything resetting cleaning the whole side switch and nothing is working what do I do!?

I tried every suggestion. Then just by luck I was able to fix my problem. I went to settings and sounds and found that somehow the ringer and alerts was all the way down to mute. I slid it up to higher volume and it worked fine after that. Hope this helps

Thank you so much. None of the suggestions above this post were working. I was panicking already thinking my speakers were dead. Mine wasn't muted down by the way, I just scrolled left and right and speaker sounds started playing.

I too had struggled with issue for last few days ( since I use headphones rarely, do not recall when was last time used).

here is how my problem got resolved:

setting-->Music-->Volume limit

it had got set mute range. I moved it to father (to max volume level)

it started working !!!

Here's what worked for me, after failed attempts at other solutions.  You know those thin, paper covered wire wraps used for securing a full trash bag?  I took one of those and inserted it into the headphone jack hole.  Gave it a good poking and twisting, like getting the wax outta your ear.  Tapped the iPad upside a few times.  Repeat.  Then it worked!!!

None of the posts here helped but I found my solution on another site... It said sometimes moisture can get in the earphone jack and to try using a hair dryer. I ran the hair dryer to dry the jack for about 30 to 60 seconds on warm and that did the trick!

Okay guys this is so simple. My iPod 5 had the same problem. It said I had headphones in but I didn't and the sound didn't work. I tried almost all of the suggestions on here and nothing worked. But I figured it out. All you do it go to Settings, then click Sounds, and slide that volume bar down and back up again and then it should work.
