iMac no longer asking for password after shut down

I have a new iMac running Sierra 10.12.6 and all of a sudden it is not prompting me for a password when I shut down then restart. It opens straight to the desktop.

I have restarted in "Safe" mode in an attempt to clear the problem, but still no request for password.

Thoughts appreciated.

It is in warranty, so use the warranty. Make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple. Or take advantage of your 90 days of free telephone support.

Hi Happy,

I'm out of the 90 day warranty though I do have Apple Care. I'd rather not lug my iMac into the mall. I was attempting to see if there was anyone in the community who might have a ready solution prior to initiating an Apple Support call. Am I approaching this incorrectly in this forum??

Best,

Bill

Try backing up your files, erase the drive, reinstall OS X.

Clone El Capitan and Sierra using Disk Utility

  1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears.
  2. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu then press the Continue button.
  3. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
  4. Select Restore from the Edit menu of Disk Utility. A panel will drop down.
  5. Select the source volume from the drop down menu in the panel.
  6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

Destination means an external drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

Install Sierra or El Capitan from Scratch

     Backup if possible before continuing.

  1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Apple logo appears. When the Utility Menu appears:
  2. Select Disk Utility from the Utility Menu and click on Continue button.
  3. When Disk Utility loads select the volume (indented entry, usually Macintosh HD) from the Device list.
  4. Click on the Erase icon in Disk Utility's main window. A panel will drop down.
  5. Set the Format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
  6. Click on the Apply button, then wait for the Done button to activate and click on it.
  7. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu.
  8. Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

As an alternative, do you think installing High Sierra might solve the issue??

Thanks,

Not unless you first erase the drive and install High Sierra from scratch. One should never upgrade a malfunctioning system.
