logic pro x MIDI stops working

Logic Pro X 10.3.2 on a MacBook Pro 13-inch, early 2011 with 2,3 GHz i5 processor and 16 GB memory.

525 GB SSD and Sierra recently installed.

Akai EIE pro interface.

The problem: MIDI tracks with external hardware instruments play back most of the time, but when an audio track is activated or set to record, MIDI either stops completely or plays random notes from the sequence in odd time signature.

This is often accompanied by a drone which persists when the audio track is deactivated or recording is stopped. Stopping recording changes the tone of the drone.

This happens with all the hardware synths I've tried on this system since Logic 9 and OS 10.9.

Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 interface gives similar results.

MIDI connection is directly from the interface.

Any help greatly appreciated.
