Font Book Smart Collections

It is easy to understand how to make smart collections in Fontbook, but it is very hard to do. The drop-down window is so undersized you can't even see one criterion:

Is there any way to set a preference to make the window usably large?

(I think Apple should put out operating systems once every two years so they have a chance to fix bugs instead of just accumulating them.)

Perhaps you shouldn't be messing with macOS, such as deleting property list files, command-line utilities that you can run through shells such as Onyx, and repairing the UI with XRevert.

iMac, macOS Sierra (10.12), (UI repaired for better esthetics)

Just a suggestion from someone who doesn't do those things, and cannot duplicate the problem either.

I can't duplicate your issue.

Obviously, something isn't working correctly for you, but that's not the same as "everyone".

Create a new user account. Login to the new account and test Font Book. If it behaves correctly in their, then the problem is specific to your normal account. If you see it in the new account, then it's a system wide issue.

There are different methods to increase the size of the window , take cursor on top menu bar click on zoom .

Place the cursor on corners , and move three fingers diagonally towards the outer end or you can can click on double arrows .

I've been using Macs since 1987, so I know how to resize windows. Making the main window bigger doesn't improve the dialog box, as below. I have a lot of problems with macOS and the one person who says, "I can't reproduce it," thinks that resolves the issue, even though there are a lot of people reporting the same problems elsewhere on the web. I'm happy that Sierra works for you, but it's supposed to work for everyone. I was a beta tester for Vista. All bug reports came back to all beta testers "as designed" and "can't reproduce." This wasn't the case in previous betas. Releasing Vista was more important than getting it to work right, and you know the results. When anyone says, "I can't reproduce it," or "no one else has the problem" when it is all over the web, I don't believe it.

This dialog box was too small on previous versions of macOS/OS X.

In Sierra we have something new, which is related. Many people cannot select icons with the arrow keys the same as documented on Apple's website. Highlight an icon, then use the shift-arrow keys, and you end up playing a game of Snake instead of selecting icons properly. Since there is someone who can say, "I can't reproduce it," I have to throw up my hands and put up with it. In the case of selecting icons and Font Book, I have gotten the same behavior after doing the following:

  • Tried it in different accounts
  • Tried it on three different Macs, including a 2017 iMac, a 2012 MacBook Pro, and a 2013 iMac.
  • Ran all disk utilities (not Disk Utility, I mean all the command-line utilities that you can run through shells, such as Onyx)
  • Deleted the keyboard's plist file
  • Reset NVRAM
  • Reset SMC
  • Reset NVRAM and reinstalled macOS
  • Reset SMC and reinstalled macOS
  • Reset NVRAM and SMC and reinstalled macOS
  • Reset NVRAM and SMC and did a full install of macOS
  • I have not deleted Font Book's plist files, because I don't know which one to delete.
  • I tried it with Sierra's native circus-poster motif, and after repairing the UI with XRevert.
  • I have reported it in Apple's feedback after 10.12, 10.12.1, 10.12.2, 10.12.3, 10.12.4, 10.12.5, and 10.12.6.

And none of these fixed the problem. These are genuine bugs.

The main window can be resized , but the inside window cannot be resized , it remains fixed only .

SMC , PRAM , safe mode, reinstalling the os has no connection with it , removing com.apple.FontBook. plist from user library > preferences folder will not help , so let it be like this only , you have already given feed back to apple , they will read it .

I cannot reproduce this on my mac (10.12.6).

Below you can see how it looks here. Not only the criterion fits, but the sheet grows every time I add more criteria.

That said, this does look familiar - a similar problem used to happen with the Mail rules sheet - but again I can't reproduce it. The problem what the sheet would gradually shorten as you open the same rule a few times. This may be what has happened to you. Some bug, maybe, but not one that is widespread.

This is technically a "sheet," I believe, and it is not supposed to be resizeable. It is supposed to be large enough. I wanted to emphasize that I have tried every possible remedy, including ones that don't seem relevant.

Not being able to reproduce a problem doesn't close the issue, it only means that you can't reproduce the problem, which means you know what's causing it or how to fix it. The problem still exists. To give what I hope is a humorous example, it's as if I said, "I have a toothache," and you respond, "I don't have a toothache so you must be mistaken."

I see no evidence that Apple reads or acts on feedback.

I am very happy for you, but if you can't reproduce the problem, you can't help me with it. My problem still exists.

Not being able to reproduce a problem doesn't close the issue, it only means that you can't reproduce the problem,

Er, yes, two of us have said that now. Drop the attitude. You're going to lose the desire for anyone to try and help you if this is how all of your responses are going to be.

I said what I meant, and only that. I can't reproduce the problem. I even said it's obviously a problem on your end. At no point have I, or anyone else called you a liar, an uneducated computer user, or anything else of the sort. We can't duplicate the issue. It means exactly as it reads. Stop adding more to our statements than exist.

Did you try a new user account as I suggested? If not, why not? You can't rule out possible issues if all you're going to do is continue to gripe and not try anything you haven't done already to narrow down the problem.

Good catch, John. I rarely read anyone's tagline, so didn't notice that big clue. So, let's see. The OP uses third party tools to hack the UI itself, then complains when he breaks it.

That means the only solution is to reinstall the OS to repair the damage caused by the user.

Hello !

           Kenneth

This is default setting in Mac computer , this not a problem in the computer or a bug what Luis suggested is to click on plus sign and increase the inner window , but without adding criteria the window size cannot be increased , and avoid using some apps if they exist to change these settings .

Best Wishes !

Well, this evokes some hostility toward His Royal Highness Jony Ive. If he could come down from his ivory tower and make a human-compatible UI, in the visible color spectrum, that doesn't look like an extraterrestrial circus poster, no one would have to replace his crude symbols with icons.

Adding criteria does increase the box, but only the top third of the last criterion is visible. Many people change the system font, which I imagine could cause this problem, but that's not the case.

As per this article macOS Sierra: Manage windows on the desktop

See this sentence in paragraph under resize and minimize windows .

Some windows can’t be moved or resized.
