mac failed hard drive showing flashing file sym...

My screen on my Mac Book Pro early 2011 is only showing a flashing file "picture" which eventually stops & powers the device off. Does this indicate a hard drive failure & if so can anything be done to recover it or the files on there please ? Thanks
